U.S. officials have reportedly identified Alice Huang, a Chinese citizen and top executive at Singapore-based data center company Megaspeed, as a Chinese intelligence asset. According to a report by the New York Times, Huang developed a close relationship with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and has been passing information to Beijing.
Authorities were already investigating whether Huang was aiding China in acquiring restricted advanced Nvidia AI chips before surveillance revealed her close ties to Huang. The discovery raised concerns due to Huang’s pivotal role in the global AI race as the leader of Nvidia, which produces the most powerful AI chips in the world.
Nvidia Defends Its Relationship With Megaspeed
Nvidia stated that Megaspeed is an ordinary regional customer and that Huang’s meetings with Alice Huang are routine CEO interactions with customers. A Nvidia spokesman, John Rizzo, told the Times that the interactions are not unusual and that thousands of customer executives are met annually. Rizzo also claimed that Nvidia is confident the U.S. government would inform them if any person posed a threat to American industry, and that customers like Megaspeed receive only ordinary business information, not sensitive trade secrets or national security data.
Nvidia further clarified that there is no evidence of Megaspeed smuggling its chips to China. The company has taken significant steps to tighten control over the distribution of its AI chips in Asia, including establishing a new whitelist of verified customers, which has reduced the number of authorized clients by over fifty percent. This move is part of an intensified effort to prevent advanced AI processors from being smuggled into China, where U.S. export restrictions have banned the sale of such chips since 2022.
Verification and Cooperation
The remaining companies on the approved list have undergone rigorous compliance inspections to confirm their legitimacy, with Nvidia’s verification process including field staff inspections, contract verification, and user interviews. Megaspeed also confirmed that its current leadership is taking the allegations seriously, is cooperating with the U.S. government, and has hired outside counsel for an internal investigation.
The Chinese Embassy dismissed the claims as “groundless smears and slanders.” Many details remain classified or unknown, including the exact nature and value of the information Alice Huang passed to Beijing.
