Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has arrested a Cuban national for allegedly illegally voting in U.S. elections, marking another step in a nationwide effort to combat noncitizen voting. The arrest took place in the swing state of Pennsylvania, where maintaining electoral integrity is a key priority for federal authorities.

Arrest of Osmal Sanchez Loy

Osmal Sanchez Loy, a Cuban national, was taken into custody by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents on October 23. He faces charges in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania for illegally voting in U.S. elections as a foreign national. Loy, who was never granted lawful permanent resident status, had a history of criminal convictions dating back to the late 1980s.

In 1987, Loy was convicted of drug crimes, and in 1991, he was found guilty of receiving stolen property. Despite these convictions, he remained in the U.S. on a visa. In 2009, a federal immigration judge ordered his deportation, but he was not removed and continued to live in the country for the next 17 years.

Part of a National Crackdown

Loy’s arrest is part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to address noncitizen voting. This initiative includes a nationwide crackdown on individuals who are alleged to have engaged in fraudulent voting practices. Recently, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the arrest of more than a dozen foreign nationals accused of illegally voting in U.S. elections.

Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Special Agent in Charge Nathan Abel emphasized the importance of protecting electoral integrity. He stated, “Protecting our electoral integrity remains a top priority.” Abel also noted that the agency will continue working with partners to ensure that violators are held accountable for their actions.

Legal and Immigration Implications

The case highlights the ongoing legal and immigration challenges faced by individuals who entered the U.S. on temporary visas and later attempted to participate in the electoral process without proper legal status. Loy’s arrest underscores the federal government’s commitment to enforcing immigration laws and maintaining the integrity of U.S. elections.
