Texts Detail Alleged Murder Plot in ‘American Idol’ Star’s Trial
Text messages reveal alleged murder plans by ‘American Idol’ alum Caleb Flynn during affair with mistress.

Caleb Flynn, a former ‘American Idol’ contestant, faces murder charges after his wife, Ashley Flynn, was found fatally shot at their home in Tipp City, Ohio. The couple’s two young daughters were asleep in the next room during the incident, which occurred on February 16. Flynn, 40, claims the death was the result of a burglary gone wrong, but his alleged mistress, Alleigha Botner, testified that he had been sending her text messages expressing a desire to kill Ashley.
Texts Reveal Dark Intentions
Botner, who testified in court this week, read texts exchanged with Flynn during their nearly two-year affair. In one message from September 2025, Flynn allegedly wrote, “I think what I’m willing to sacrifice is my daughters, a quarter million dollars, salaried job, a place to live, possibly a church that I serve at.”
In an October 2025 message, Flynn reportedly said, “me leaving douche means ruining my daughters’ lives and yet I will still do it.” Botner explained that “douche” was the nickname they gave to Ashley, and he also used derogatory terms like “b*tch,” “wh*re,” “sl*t,” and “spawn of Satan” to refer to his wife.
Plan for Murder and Emotional Distress
Flynn allegedly wrote, “I’m willing to flip my life upside down, to lose a job, to lose a salary, to lose a house, to lose my daughters full time and to go through this hell that will come with leaving her.” In another message from August 2025, he said, “I was up until 4 a.m. last night crying, literally trying to think of ways to kill her and not go to jail.”
He also reportedly wrote, “If I could literally kill her and not go to hell, I would do it in a heartbeat. That is how dark and how hateful I feel.” Botner admitted that she, too, expressed a desire to kill Ashley during their conversations.
Impact on Family and Church
Ashley’s sister, Kayla Keyt, testified that the couple’s daughters were “shocked” by the affair and the tragedy. The girls, who knew Botner from church, were upset that their father did not love their mother as much as she loved him. One daughter reportedly said, “I’m not surprised” upon learning about the affair.
Botner abruptly quit her position at the church days after Flynn’s arrest, though she did not provide a reason for her resignation. Flynn was charged with murder, aggravated murder, felonious assault, tampering with evidence, and witness intimidation, and he pleaded not guilty to all charges.
