An elderly woman from Orange County, California, has been arrested after video footage revealed her abandoning and running over a puppy with her minivan. Hahn Nguyen, 75, of Anaheim, was identified by Santa Ana Police Department using license plate reader technology after surveillance footage captured the incident.

Abandonment and Cruelty Allegations

According to the Santa Ana Police Department, Nguyen was seen pulling over her minivan in a Santa Ana neighborhood, placing her 9-month-old pitbull mix puppy on the pavement, and leaving a pile of dog food before driving away. As she drove off, the minivan ran over the puppy, remaining on top of the dog for about 15 seconds before she continued driving.

Nguyen, who claimed she did not intentionally run over the puppy, admitted to owning and abandoning the dog. Police found her vehicle in her garage, and she was subsequently arrested on charges of animal cruelty and animal abandonment.

Public Appeal for Identification

The incident, which occurred on September 8, sparked a public appeal from police for help identifying the car and the woman in it. The surveillance footage shared by authorities led to the arrest of Nguyen on October 1. The dog, named Blackey, died as a result of the incident.

Nguyen’s boyfriend reportedly expressed annoyance over the puppy chewing his shoes, which may have contributed to her decision to abandon the animal. The case highlights the severity of animal cruelty and the importance of public awareness in such matters.
