Homeland Security presents DOJ with a large case against Rep. Ilhan Omar as investigation continues.

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin confirmed that his department has presented a “large case” to the Justice Department in the ongoing federal investigation of Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN). The case, which has not resulted in any charges against the congresswoman, was the result of extensive work by Homeland Security Investigations before being handed over to prosecutors.
Investigation Expands Beyond Omar
Prosecutors have stated that the inquiry extends beyond Omar, noting in a court filing that the investigation of “the Subject and other individuals continues.” While the filing did not name any other individuals or describe their roles, it emphasized the ongoing nature of the probe.
Agents executed a second warrant on the same day they searched Omar’s Washington residence, which was at the home of her sister, Sahra Noor. During the search, boxes of documents were removed. Grand jury subpoenas have been issued to more than a dozen recipients, including relatives. The grand jury, which is sitting in Minnesota, is currently weighing the evidence.
Legal and Political Context
U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro confirmed that “there are several investigations going on” involving Omar, and her office has also initiated a separate review of her financial disclosures. Mullin dismissed claims that the case is political, stating, “We’re not weaponizing, we’re not using political theater on this.” He emphasized that enforcement does not depend on a person’s office or political affiliation.
Former President Barack Obama criticized the potential for selective targeting, arguing that “the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs.” Over 170 House Democrats have urged the Justice Department to drop the inquiry, citing a 2019 review by the Trump administration that found insufficient evidence of wrongdoing.
Omar’s Response and Allegations
Omar has denied any wrongdoing and called the investigation politically motivated. She has also rejected the long-standing claim that she married her brother, a claim that has never been substantiated. Attorney General Todd Blanche signed off on the warrant, attesting that its timing was not intended to influence any election. Omar is currently on the ballot in Tuesday’s election.
