Luke Oakenshield, a homeless veteran from Chandler, Arizona, made headlines when he launched a GoFundMe campaign to support Walt Zerod, a Red Baron pizza worker who was harassed by an influencer in a viral video. The campaign, titled “Support a Harassed Red Baron Worker,” has raised nearly $600,000, with GoFundMe coordinating a direct transfer after Oakenshield tracked Walt down and connected with him.

In the viral video, Walt, a father of four, grew emotional as he explained his struggles with financial stress and the added pressure of being late to pick up his children. He shouted at the prankster, saying, “You’re probably making money off of this; I can’t even pay my goddamn mortgage! And I got four kids at home. So not funny!” The clip quickly gained traction online, prompting widespread support for Walt.

Walt himself posted a thank-you message on the GoFundMe page, expressing his gratitude for the kindness and support he received. He mentioned that his family is doing well and that he is keeping a low profile for privacy while considering whether to share more of his story. “I wanted to take a moment to personally thank everyone who has donated, shared this fundraiser, or left a kind message. The kindness and encouragement you’ve shown me and my family have meant more than I can put into words,” he wrote.

Red Baron Pizza’s parent company, Schwan’s, confirmed that Walt remains a valued employee and has checked on his well-being. The company publicly backed him on X with the message, “He’s still here. He’s got a fan club. Including us,” paired with a graphic declaring employee-of-the-month nominations closed.

As donations for Walt surpassed half a million dollars, details about Oakenshield’s own situation began circulating. His friend Dom Certalic launched a separate GoFundMe titled “Support Luke Who Defended the Red Baron Worker,” which has already raised over $17,000 toward a $24,000 goal. Dom wrote that Luke is a homeless veteran dealing with relationship issues, unemployment, and PTSD, and that he recently loaned Luke $20 so he could move the car that is currently his home.

“Even in the middle of his own struggles, Luke has a good heart and thinks of others first,” Dom noted, adding that Luke was more focused on Walt than on drawing attention to himself. The fundraiser’s description states that Luke is a homeless veteran who started the viral GoFundMe for Walt and helped raise a quarter million dollars for him while Luke himself was homeless. It also mentions that Luke is in a very difficult place and needs support right now.

“I had to loan Luke $20 just three days ago so he could move his car, which is also his home right now,” Dom wrote. “Even in the middle of his own struggles, Luke has a good heart and thinks of others first. He was more worried about Walt getting bullied than drawing attention to what he is going through himself. Luke also struggles with PTSD.”

The fundraiser aims to help Luke get back on his feet and begin rebuilding some stability in his life. Donations will go toward housing, getting settled, securing more reliable transportation, and paying off debt that is holding him back. Support in these areas could help relieve some of the immediate pressure he is facing while he works toward a more stable future.

Oakenshield confirmed that Dom’s account is “100% accurate” and that he started the original fundraiser “because I know struggle, and never thought it would explode like it did.” Those who wish to donate to Oakenshield can do so here.

As the story continued to gain traction, the internet rallied behind both Walt and Luke, raising over $20,000 for the veteran who had already helped raise over $500,000 for Walt. The combined efforts highlighted the power of community support and the importance of kindness in times of need.

Community Support and the Power of Kindness

The viral story of Walt Zerod and Luke Oakenshield has sparked a wave of community support, showcasing how acts of kindness can have a ripple effect. The GoFundMe campaigns for both individuals have not only provided financial assistance but also brought attention to the challenges faced by homeless veterans and workers in need of support.

Walt’s story, while heartbreaking, has also inspired many to reflect on the importance of compassion and empathy in today’s fast-paced world. His willingness to share his struggles and the outpouring of support he received have served as a reminder that no one should have to face hardship alone.

Similarly, Luke’s actions have highlighted the importance of community and the impact that one person can have on the lives of others. His decision to help Walt, despite his own struggles, is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the power of kindness.

As the story continues to evolve, it remains a powerful example of how individuals can come together to support one another in times of need. The combined efforts of the community, the GoFundMe campaigns, and the support from Red Baron Pizza’s parent company have not only provided immediate relief but also inspired a broader conversation about the importance of compassion and empathy in our society.
