Abdul El-Sayed’s campaign surrogate Hasan Piker sparked widespread backlash after comparing pro-Israel voters in a heavily Jewish Michigan suburb to the Ku Klux Klan during a livestream. The remarks, which were widely condemned as anti-Semitic and divisive, drew a sharp rebuke from Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI), who is Jewish and called the comments ‘deeply offensive.’
Anti-Semitic Remarks Draw Condemnation
During a rambling livestream, Piker, who has previously made controversial remarks about the September 11 attacks, launched into a hateful rant while watching a video of Democratic organizers canvassing in West Bloomfield. He described the effort as ‘the wildest door knocking operation of all time’ and claimed the community was ‘one of the more Zionist wealthy districts in the country.’
Piker went on to compare the canvassing effort to a KKK campaign, saying it was ‘the equivalent of going to that, like KKK neighborhood to stump for a Black candidate who’s running expressly… to abolish anti-miscegenation laws.’ He later called the opposition to El-Sayed ‘Jewish supremacy,’ claiming it was ‘racial supremacy’ and ‘Jewish supremacy.’
Hasan Piker’s latest online rant targeting Michiganders in West Bloomfield Township, comparing the community to the KKK, should be condemned loudly. It is anti-semitic, divisive and deeply offensive.
Slotkin condemned the remarks on X, calling them ‘anti-semitic, divisive, and deeply offensive.’ She urged others to condemn the comments, stating that Piker’s remarks were ‘flippantly attacking a proud, diverse community.’
El-Sayed Condemns Remarks
El-Sayed himself also criticized the remarks, stating that comparing Jewish Michiganders to the KKK was ‘utterly inappropriate and flat out wrong.’ The backlash adds to internal Democratic infighting surrounding El-Sayed’s campaign.
Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI), whom El-Sayed narrowly defeated in the August Democratic primary, urged him to pull a campaign ad featuring Tucker Carlson, saying he ‘wouldn’t vote for [Michigan GOP Senate nominee] Mike Rogers at gunpoint.’ Stevens also called on El-Sayed to denounce another ad that blamed Israel for America’s economic woes.
El-Sayed responded to Stevens over the separate advertising dispute, taking a direct swipe at his primary rival, saying she ‘seems intent on relitigating a primary that ended three months ago.’
