Qatar has sent a high-level delegation to Tehran in an effort to mediate between the United States and Iran, as both nations continue to face mounting pressure over nuclear proliferation and regional tensions. The delegation, led by a senior adviser to Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani, arrived in Tehran on Friday, five days after presenting a peace proposal that Iran deemed unacceptable.
Iran Rejects Previous Peace Offer
According to an official briefed on the talks, the previous Qatari proposal was rejected by Iran due to its inclusion of concessions on nuclear weapons, which Tehran refuses to consider. The Iranian side has made it clear that they are unwilling to discuss uranium enrichment until the U.S. unilaterally ends its blockade of Iranian ports and lifts sanctions on oil.
U.S. Seeks Direct Talks with Iran
Meanwhile, U.S. Vice President JD Vance has reached out to Iranian Supreme National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei, a former head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), in an effort to open direct high-level negotiations without the use of mediators like Qatar. Vance’s letter emphasized the U.S. priority of ensuring Iran does not acquire a nuclear weapon, while also stressing the importance of rebuilding Iran’s war- and sanctions-ravaged economy and preserving its national sovereignty.
Possible Venues for U.S.-Iran Talks
A U.S. official familiar with the negotiations suggested that Doha, Qatar, and Istanbul, Turkey, could serve as possible venues for a direct U.S.-Iran meeting. This meeting could represent Iran’s last opportunity to avoid renewed U.S.-Israeli military action, especially following the U.S. midterm elections.
Iran Welcomes Negotiation Efforts
An unnamed Iranian official told The National that Tehran welcomes any efforts aimed at negotiations, talks, or collective consultation. This statement underscores the Iranian government’s willingness to engage in dialogue, albeit under specific conditions that prioritize their national interests and sovereignty.
