During a recent episode of CNN’s ‘The Source,’ Democratic Senator Tina Smith of Minnesota addressed the growing controversy surrounding federal involvement in Alaska‘s upcoming elections. Smith labeled the so-called ‘ballot stacking’ story as a distraction, asserting that it is an abuse of power by federal authorities attempting to divert attention from key issues facing Alaska voters.

Federal Actions and Voter Focus

Smith argued that the federal government’s increased presence in Alaska is an effort to shift the focus of voters away from pressing local concerns. ‘It is clearly an abuse of power, if you ask me, to have this federal surge into Alaska to try to distract Alaska voters from the fact that gas is, like, nearly $5 a gallon in Alaska,’ she said.

Smith emphasized that Alaska voters are informed and capable of making their own decisions, regardless of the tactics used by either political party. ‘Alaska voters are smart, and they know what to do. They know, they can see Dan Sullivan, incumbent Republican, and know who they’re going to vote for,’ she stated.

Ranked-Choice Voting and Election Process

Smith also pointed out that the election in Alaska is conducted under a ranked-choice voting system. According to her, this method ensures that the election results will be clear as the process unfolds. ‘It’s all going to wash out as the election moves forward,’ she said, adding that such tactics are not unique to one party.

She further mentioned that similar strategies have been used by both Republicans and Democrats in past elections, including against Mary Peltola when she ran for Congress. ‘These kind of tactics are used by Republicans and Democrats. They actually were used against Mary Peltola when she was running for Congress earlier,’ Smith noted.

Political Implications and Voter Sentiment

Smith concluded her remarks by expressing confidence in the outcome of the election, citing dissatisfaction with current political leaders. ‘People want change, they don’t like what Donald Trump is doing, and that’s why Dan Sullivan is going to lose in Alaska,’ she said.
