German authorities have confirmed that the Halloween riots in Frankfurt were primarily carried out by individuals with a migrant background, in conjunction with far-left groups. The incidents, which saw widespread damage and clashes with police, have prompted calls for stricter measures and greater scrutiny of such communities.

Riots and Damage Reported

According to Hessian Interior Minister Roman Poseck, 17 shops were damaged during the riots, with five being looted. Despite police estimating up to 1,500 rioters, only 54 have been arrested so far. The incidents were described as a clear warning of the need for decisive action.

Special Commission Formed

Poseck announced the formation of a special commission to investigate the events and emphasized the importance of addressing the issue without any false taboos. He also reiterated the need to protect lawful migrants while condemning the violence.

Police Response and Injuries

Policing efforts were extensive, with the Zeil shopping street completely cordoned off. Despite this, looting continued, including at a gun store. One hundred police officers were injured, including one seriously. Molotov cocktails were also used against police, leading to the deployment of the Special Operations Unit (SEK) for backup.

Broader Protests and Criticism

The riots in Frankfurt occurred amid nationwide protests that mirrored similar movements in France. Over 120,000 people took to the streets in 30 German cities, with violent scenes reported in Berlin, Cologne, Hamburg, and Stuttgart. The federal Interior Minister, Alexander Dobrindt, condemned the hijacking of peaceful demonstrations by violent left-wing groups and migrant troublemakers.

Political Backlash and Calls for Action

The government has faced criticism, particularly from the opposition anti-mass migration Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. AfD leader Robert Lambrou called for a closer look at left-wing extremists and migrant violence, highlighting unresolved migration issues.
