U.S. Police Prep for Halloween Chaos Amid Street Takeovers

As Halloween approaches, law enforcement agencies across the United States are preparing for what they describe as dangerous and chaotic street takeovers. These events, often involving groups of teenagers and young adults, have led to lawless behavior in urban areas, prompting cities to implement curfews and increase police presence.

Law Enforcement Takes Precautions

From the Jersey Shore to suburban Atlanta, police departments are ramping up their efforts to manage the expected surge in activity. Sgt. Betsy Brantner Smith of the National Police Association noted that call volumes often increase significantly on Halloween night due to incidents involving fireworks and other pyrotechnics, which are sometimes used in these takeovers.

These so-called ‘side shows’ or ‘meetups’ often involve vehicles burning in the middle of intersections, with onlookers dangerously close by. The goal is to create a spectacle that can be shared on social media, drawing large crowds and attracting attention. In some cases, these events have escalated into violence and looting, particularly in commercial districts.

Cities Implement Curfews and Safety Measures

In Oak Park, Illinois, the police chief has announced increased officer presence and additional safety measures to prevent a repeat of last year’s chaos, which saw over 500 teens involved in violent incidents, including fistfights and gunfire. Neighboring towns like Hyde Park are also taking proactive steps, with community groups planning to patrol streets in orange shirts to deter large gatherings.

Other cities, such as Covington, Georgia, and Long Branch, New Jersey, have implemented strict curfews for minors, requiring them to be under adult supervision after 7 p.m. on Halloween. These measures reflect a growing concern among officials about the safety of communities during the holiday.

Successful Operations in Los Angeles

Los Angeles has taken a more aggressive approach, deploying a task force to combat the issue. In September, the LAPD conducted an operation known as ‘Operation Street Sweep,’ which involved the use of drones to track and monitor the activities of street takeovers. The operation resulted in 69 arrests, 200 cars impounded, and 570 citations, including 128 juveniles who were past curfew.

These efforts highlight the seriousness with which law enforcement is treating the issue, as they seek to prevent the escalation of violence and disorder during Halloween celebrations.
