Michigan Rep. Debbie Dingell criticizes Haley Stevens for endorsing Mike Rogers, citing the impact on the race and community concerns.

Michigan Democratic Rep. Debbie Dingell expressed deep concern over Rep. Haley Stevens’ recent endorsement of Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers, calling the situation ‘painful’ and ‘sad’ during an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper. The comments came shortly after Stevens appeared on the same show to defend her decision, which she made in favor of Rogers over radical leftist Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed.
Concern Over Political Distraction
Dingell, who was interviewed moments before Stevens, said she was ‘not sure’ she would have made the same choice had she known Stevens was going to appear on the same show. She described the interview as one of the ‘most painful’ she had ever watched, and expressed worries about Stevens’ well-being over the past week.
‘I’ve had multiple conversations with her,’ Dingell said. ‘I’m far from being the only one that has.’ She also emphasized that the public in Michigan should be more focused on real issues like the cost of groceries and mortgage payments rather than political distractions.
Impact on the Senate Race
Dingell added that the media’s focus on the endorsement was ‘backfiring’ for Rogers, as El-Sayed has seen a surge in support, raising over a million dollars in recent days. She noted that there have been more walk-ins and long lines at polling places, indicating strong community sentiment against the endorsement.
‘People in the black community are really angry about who speaks for them,’ Dingell said. ‘They’re not gonna have other people speak for them.’ Despite her concerns, she remained hopeful the race would be close, citing the last-minute shift in momentum.
Support from Prominent Figures
Rogers praised Stevens for her ‘immense courage’ and ‘commitment to put Michigan first,’ while President Donald Trump also lauded her decision, calling it ‘bravery’ and emphasizing her ‘huge following’ and ‘unparalleled respect’ from Michigan’s African American and Jewish communities.
