Texas Sheriff Endorses Paxton Over Talarico on Border Security
Democrat sheriff criticizes Talarico’s policies in pro-Paxton ad, highlighting border security concerns.

In a political ad endorsing Republican Ken Paxton for the Texas U.S. Senate seat, Brooks County Sheriff Benny Martinez, a Democrat, criticized James Talarico’s positions on law enforcement and border security. Martinez highlighted Talarico’s voting record in the Texas legislature, stating that the Democrat voted against cracking down on cartels, tougher sentences for human traffickers, and allowing violent offenders to be released without bail.
Border Security Takes Center Stage
Martinez emphasized that Talarico’s so-called ‘liberal crime agenda’ would make it harder to protect residents. The ad underscores the growing divide between local law enforcement and national Democratic priorities, particularly in the context of border security.
Martinez, who was elected in 2016, has been a key figure in Brooks County, a region critical in the fight against human smuggling and illegal immigration. Despite its location about 80 miles north of the Texas-Mexico border, the county has faced significant challenges, including the tragic deaths of thousands of migrants who were abandoned by human smugglers.
Personal Experience and Political Stance
Martinez shared his personal experience with the border crisis, stating, “For more than a decade, I witnessed the horrific deaths of migrants in our county.” He noted that the discovery of these bodies or remains fell by more than 90 percent after President Donald Trump shut down the border.
Additionally, Martinez endorsed Republican Governor Greg Abbott, stating that Abbott provided essential resources and support to local law enforcement during the border crisis. He criticized Democrats for not showing up to help, saying, “Not a single Democrat ever walked into my office or called and asked how they could help.”
Cross-Party Endorsements and Party Loyalty
Martinez’s cross-party endorsements have drawn criticism from fellow Democrats, but he remains steadfast in his commitment to his county’s needs. He stated, “I have to do what is right for my county and the needs of my constituents.”
Martinez’s stance highlights the importance of border security in the key battle for the U.S. Senate, with local law enforcement taking a firm stand against national party lines.
