A 20-year-old man of Pakistani origin, suspected of organizing French-style riots in Spain, is alleged to have traveled to France before the violent October 24 protests in Barcelona, according to local media reports. The individual, whose identity has not been disclosed by authorities, is currently under pretrial detention and denied bail after being arrested by Spanish Civil Guard officials in Valencia.

Riots Escalate Amid Social Media Organization

The youth-led protest, organized through social media platforms, escalated into violent clashes with police, burning barricades, and looting in central Barcelona on October 24, 2026. Around 100 people, including 27 minors, were arrested after groups threw objects at police, set fire to rubbish containers, and damaged shops around Placa de Catalunya, La Rambla, and Ronda Universitat.

Planning and Organization of the Protests

Investigators have reportedly found evidence that the detainee was directly involved in planning the October 24 riots and used messaging platforms like Telegram, Signal, and WhatsApp to organize and promote the events. The individual also published a video claiming to be the ‘leader of Blocus Spain.’

Further analysis of the detainee’s electronic devices revealed a calendar of planned public disorder acts, with events scheduled through the end of November. The judge overseeing the case cited the risk of criminal recidivism and the detainee’s financial means as reasons for the pretrial detention.

International Travel and Social Media Bans

Investigators also noted that the detainee had visited Turkey on multiple occasions, suggesting sufficient financial resources to support such trips. The judge ordered the closure of all accounts used for organizing the riots and banned the detainee from using social media during his detention at Picassent prison in Valencia.

Spanish police have also detained several other individuals, including two minors aged 14 and 17, who are accused of promoting the October 24 Barcelona riots. The case highlights the role of social media in modern protest organization and the challenges authorities face in addressing such activities.
