According to ADP Research, businesses added 86,000 jobs in October, matching the revised estimate from the previous month and exceeding the most optimistic forecasts from economists surveyed by Econoday.

ADP economist Nela Richardson noted that employers of all sizes were actively hiring, with job-changers being attracted by a combination of bonuses, overtime, and more hours alongside higher base pay. This led to the fastest earnings growth for these workers since March 2024.

Key Sectors Show Strong Hiring Trends

The trade, transportation, and utilities sector saw the largest job gains, adding 39,000 positions. Construction and education and health services also contributed significantly, with 13,000 and 28,000 new jobs respectively. Leisure and hospitality added 19,000 jobs, while the financial sector saw an increase of 15,000. ADP’s “other services” category added 10,000 jobs.

Some Sectors Experience Job Losses

On the flip side, manufacturing payrolls declined by 1,000, while mining and natural resources saw a drop of 8,000 jobs. Information jobs fell by 2,000, and professional and business services lost 27,000 positions.

Job Growth Across Business Sizes

Smaller businesses with under 50 employees added 28,000 jobs, while those with between 50 and 499 employees saw an increase of 33,000. Larger businesses added 24,000 jobs, showing a broad-based recovery in the private sector.

The data highlights a resilient labor market, with strong hiring across multiple industries and business sizes, despite some sector-specific challenges.
