Young men across the U.S. shifted their support to Democrats in the midterm elections, voting for them by a 17-point margin after backing President Donald Trump in 2024. According to a survey by CIRCLE, a Tufts University research group, 58% of men aged 18 to 29 voted for Democrats, while 38% supported Republicans. This shift marks a significant departure from their 2024 voting behavior, driven largely by growing frustrations over the rising cost of living.

Among voters aged 18 to 24, 76% backed Democrats, with only 21% choosing Republicans. Similarly, 68% of voters aged 25 to 29 also supported Democrats, according to a CNN poll. These trends reflect a broader pattern of disillusionment among young voters, who increasingly see themselves at a disadvantage financially compared to their parents.

A Harvard Youth Poll revealed that young voters expect to be worse off financially than their parents for the first time in the poll’s history. Twenty-seven percent of respondents said they would be worse off, while 25% expected to be better off. This economic anxiety has fueled a growing sense of alienation from Trump’s policies, with a majority, 63%, of young voters stating their congressional vote was against Trump and his policies, according to the poll.

Despite Trump’s efforts to connect with young men in 2024, including appearances on popular podcasts like “The Joe Rogan Experience” and the “Full Send Podcast,” many young voters remained critical of his stance on the Iran war. Some of these podcasters, including Rogan, argued that the war contradicted Trump’s promise of “no more wars.”

Meanwhile, Democrats reclaimed control of both the House and Senate, with Republicans suffering losses in red states and gerrymandered districts. The Iran war, high living costs, and government corruption remained top issues for voters throughout the election cycle, helping Democrats secure historic victories. Generation Z, in particular, showed the lowest levels of support for the Iran war, with only 30% of Gen Z endorsing Trump’s military actions, compared to 44% of Baby Boomers and 55% of the Silent Generation.
