Former MLB Star Wins Texas House Seat
Mark Teixeira defeats ex-NIH scientist in Texas congressional race

Republican former World Series champion Mark Teixeira has won a U.S. House seat in Texas’ 21st Congressional District, defeating Democrat Kristin Hook, a former federal scientist. Teixeira secured 55% of the vote, edging out Hook’s 45% in a closely contested race, according to the Associated Press.
A Political Shift in Redistricted District
The 21st District, redrawn during Texas’ mid-decade redistricting, was carried by President Donald Trump by 22 percentage points in the 2024 presidential election, per data from the nonpartisan Dave’s Redistricting App. Teixeira’s victory marks a significant shift in the district, where Republicans have held the seat since 1979.
Teixeira’s Political and Personal Journey
Teixeira, a three-time Major League Baseball All-Star for the Texas Rangers and New York Yankees, won the Republican primary for Congress with over 61% of the vote in March. He will replace Rep. Chip Roy, who ran for Attorney General and did not seek re-election. Teixeira, who retired from baseball in 2021, moved back to Texas with his family.
Hook’s Campaign and Background
Kristin Hook, a biological scientist who worked in policy for the National Institutes of Health, ran for the seat in the 2024 election against Roy, winning only 36% of the vote. Her campaign website describes her as an organizer for female scientists who was empowered by Trump’s policies she claims were anti-science.
Teixeira’s Statement and Future Plans
“Together, we can build a better future for our families, our neighbors, and every community across Texas 21,” Teixeira said in a statement posted on X.
Thank you to my family, friends, campaign staff, and the countless supporters who stood with us during this campaign. We could not have won this race without every person who knocked on doors, worked the polls, hosted events, and pitched in to help the cause. I am truly grateful to all of you. And of course, I want to thank all of the voters across the district who placed their trust in me. Nobody will work harder to continue earning that trust. Tonight’s victory belongs to the people of Texas’s 21st District. I’m not going to Washington for myself, but rather to be a strong, responsive voice for every family in this district. Together, we can build a better future for our families, our neighbors, and every community across Texas 21. I’m excited to get to work. I will be praying for all of you and for the future of this great nation. God bless Texas, and God bless America.
Teixeira’s victory is seen as a reflection of the district’s political leanings and the impact of redistricting. The 21st District has been a stronghold for Republicans, with former Rep. Lamar Smith serving 16 terms before retiring in 2019.
