Republican former World Series champion Mark Teixeira has won a U.S. House seat in Texas’ 21st Congressional District, defeating Democrat Kristin Hook, a former federal scientist. Teixeira secured 55% of the vote, edging out Hook’s 45% in a closely contested race, according to the Associated Press.

A Political Shift in Redistricted District

The 21st District, redrawn during Texas’ mid-decade redistricting, was carried by President Donald Trump by 22 percentage points in the 2024 presidential election, per data from the nonpartisan Dave’s Redistricting App. Teixeira’s victory marks a significant shift in the district, where Republicans have held the seat since 1979.

Teixeira’s Political and Personal Journey

Teixeira, a three-time Major League Baseball All-Star for the Texas Rangers and New York Yankees, won the Republican primary for Congress with over 61% of the vote in March. He will replace Rep. Chip Roy, who ran for Attorney General and did not seek re-election. Teixeira, who retired from baseball in 2021, moved back to Texas with his family.

Hook’s Campaign and Background

Kristin Hook, a biological scientist who worked in policy for the National Institutes of Health, ran for the seat in the 2024 election against Roy, winning only 36% of the vote. Her campaign website describes her as an organizer for female scientists who was empowered by Trump’s policies she claims were anti-science.

Teixeira’s Statement and Future Plans

“Together, we can build a better future for our families, our neighbors, and every community across Texas 21,” Teixeira said in a statement posted on X.

Teixeira’s victory is seen as a reflection of the district’s political leanings and the impact of redistricting. The 21st District has been a stronghold for Republicans, with former Rep. Lamar Smith serving 16 terms before retiring in 2019.
