Former Pennsylvania State Representative Bob Brooks has secured a historic victory in Pennsylvania’s 7th Congressional District, defeating incumbent U.S. Representative Ryan Mackenzie, a Trump-endorsed Republican. With 97% of the votes counted, Brooks emerged with 164,370 votes, or 56%, compared to Mackenzie’s 128,655 votes, or 43%, according to the Associated Press.
Brooks Campaign Focuses on Housing and Social Programs
Brooks, a longtime firefighter and union president, ran on a platform centered around housing affordability. He pledged to restrict private equity firms from purchasing single-family homes and backed the Homes for Every Local Protector, Educator, and Responder (HELPER) Act, which aims to expand VA-style home loans to teachers, nurses, and first responders. His campaign also criticized Washington’s political climate, stating, “Washington’s a dumpster fire.”
Mackenzie’s Focus on Tax Relief and Social Programs
Mackenzie, who served on the House Homeland Security Committee, emphasized lowering costs and providing tax relief. His campaign highlighted efforts to increase the standard tax deduction, eliminate taxes on Social Security for nearly 90% of seniors, and add childcare tax credits to Trump’s Working Families Tax Cuts. He also credited himself with helping pass the largest-ever expansion of affordable housing tax credits.
Incumbent Opposes Social Security Cuts
Mackenzie opposed any cuts to Social Security benefits and pledged to invest more in Medicare, vowing to protect the social safety net. His campaign also focused on border security and combating human trafficking and drug smuggling.
Brooks’ Victory Marks Shift in Pennsylvania Politics
This win marks a significant shift in Pennsylvania’s political landscape, as the 7th Congressional District, previously held by Republicans, now returns to Democratic control. Brooks’ victory reflects growing support for progressive policies and a potential realignment in the state’s electoral dynamics.
