Iranian officials and regime-aligned media are celebrating the Democratic Party’s sweeping midterm election victories in the United States, framing the results as a victory for anti-war sentiment and a rebuke of U.S. foreign policy. The celebrations come amid heightened tensions between Iran and the United States, with Iranian leaders claiming the results signal a broader shift in global power dynamics.
Iranian Leaders Commend Democratic Wins
Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, Tehran’s chief negotiator, claimed the American public delivered a message against the war with Iran, which began in February. In a tweet, Qalibaf wrote,
Conscience or the cost of living, Americans said NO TO WAR, and we endorse this message.
Iranian judiciary chief Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei also celebrated the results, declaring President Donald Trump a loser in both war and politics. He said, “Trump was defeated both in war and in politics. We will certainly inflict more defeats on him. This is only the dawn of what is to come.”
The Tehran Times, an English-language newspaper based in Iran and aligned with the Islamic regime, ran the headline “Operation Midterms Hammer,” a play on the U.S. military operation against Iran’s nuclear facilities. The publication blamed Republicans’ electoral losses on Trump.
Threats and Symbolism
Other Iranian publications joined the celebration. Hamshahri, a newspaper affiliated with Tehran’s municipality, featured a blindfolded Trump on its front page beneath the headline “Iran’s shadow over U.S. elections.”
Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei said that conflict would continue regardless of which political party controlled Washington. In a letter shared on his social media account, Khamenei wrote, “If there are still those who harbor even a slight hope for a change in behavior or partisan and factional shifts within the system of domination, or who imagine that by giving concessions to America they can dissuade it from hostility toward the Iranian nation, they are gravely mistaken.”
The celebrations came alongside a chilling, though routine, threat against Trump. On Tuesday, Iranian authorities unveiled a massive billboard in Tehran’s Enghelab Square depicting the president behind bars beneath the words “We will kill Trump.” Additional banners portrayed Trump, Vice President JD Vance, special envoy Steve Witkoff, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with bloodied faces against burning American and Israeli flags.
Global Reactions
The celebratory rhetoric comes as Tehran remains on alert for the possibility Trump could resume military operations following the Republican losses. China reacted to the Democrats’ big night by casting the elections as “an internal affair of the United States,” according to a foreign ministry spokeswoman.
In Russia, state-run newspaper Rossiyskaya Gazeta suggested the Republican defeat could ultimately hurt Ukraine, warning European leaders, “Brussels, brace yourself. After the Republicans’ defeat, Trump’s wrath will fall on Europe.”
