Republican Governor Larry Rhoden has won re-election in South Dakota, defeating Democrat challenger Dan Ahlers in a tightly contested race. With 193,318 votes, or 63% of the total, Rhoden secured a decisive victory over Ahlers, who received 111,137 votes, or 36%, according to the Associated Press. This marks Rhoden’s second term in office, following his assumption of the role in 2025 after former Governor Kristi Noem resigned to become U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security.

Focus on Tax Cuts and Economic Growth

Rhoden’s campaign centered on lowering state taxes and providing property tax relief, with his team highlighting a record of securing state property tax cuts averaging between 25% and 45%. These cuts have resulted in approximately $175 million in total taxpayer savings. His platform also emphasized low state unemployment, strong GDP growth, and rising income rates as key economic achievements.

Rural Healthcare and Education Reforms

Rhoden also prioritized rural healthcare investment, securing $189 million in federal funds for the Rural Health Transformation Program. This funding supports technology upgrades, workforce recruitment, and expanded services in rural areas. In education, he advocated for replacing “Common Core with common sense” and opted into the Trump administration’s school choice initiative, offering parents federal income tax credits of up to $1,700.

Democratic Candidate’s Promises

Democrat Dan Ahlers, who ran on a platform of increasing housing availability and lowering costs, pledged to “fight for wages that let hardworking South Dakotans get ahead” and “invest deeply in small businesses.” If elected, Ahlers also intended to address workforce shortages in healthcare, particularly in rural and mental health services.

Educational Priorities

Both candidates emphasized education reform, with Rhoden focusing on school choice and Ahlers promising to recruit and retain teachers, invest in school infrastructure, and expand after-school programs for students.
