A Democrat attorney general, Aaron Ford, has won the Nevada gubernatorial race, unseating Republican incumbent Joe Lombardo. The Associated Press called the race early Wednesday after 87 percent of votes were counted, with Ford securing 51.5 percent of the vote compared to Lombardo’s 44.3 percent.

Unifying Message from Lombardo

Following the results, Lombardo expressed his congratulations to Ford, emphasizing unity and shared goals for Nevada’s future. “Whether you cast your vote for me or Attorney General Ford, we are all Nevadans, and our shared future is far more important than the differences of any one election,” Lombardo said in a phone call to Ford. He concluded with a call to action, stating, “Nevada’s greatest days are still ahead. May we never give up, never give in, and never stop dreaming.”

Ford’s Campaign Focus on Working Families

In a statement to local media, Ford’s campaign highlighted the victory as a win for working Nevadans. “This victory belongs to the housekeepers, nurses, teachers, rideshare drivers, electricians, and all working Nevadans who will no longer have to settle for working harder than ever yet struggling more and more to afford to live,” Ford’s team said.

Ford also took to X, emphasizing that “Nevadans of every background” deserve to afford their “version of the American Dream.” He added, “The power belongs to the people, and starting today, Nevada families come first.”

Political Shift in Nevada

Ford’s win marks a significant shift in Nevada’s political landscape, as the state has become increasingly competitive in recent years. His victory reflects a broader trend of Democratic gains in traditionally Republican-leaning states, driven by issues such as healthcare, education, and economic opportunity.

With Ford taking over as governor, the focus will shift to addressing key challenges facing Nevada, including infrastructure, public safety, and economic development. His administration will also need to navigate the complex political environment in a state that has seen a growing divide between urban and rural areas, as well as between different demographic groups.
