Young voters in France are increasingly turning to Marine Le Pen, leader of the National Rally, as the presidential election approaches, according to recent polls. A new survey by Ifop, reported by Valeurs Actuelles, indicates that Le Pen now has nearly one in three votes from 18- to 24-year-olds, marking a significant shift in political sentiment.

Shift in Youth Support

Despite long being viewed as a threat by left-leaning youth, Le Pen’s party has seen a historic rise in support among younger voters. While she trails Jean-Luc Mélenchon, a far-left firebrand with 40 per cent support among young voters, Le Pen has steadily improved her standing over the years. In her first presidential bid in 2012, she earned 15 per cent of youth votes, rising to 21 per cent in 2017 and 25 per cent in 2022.

Role of Young Leadership

The National Rally’s success with young voters may also be attributed to the influence of Jordan Bardella, Le Pen’s 30-year-old deputy, who has built a strong social media presence. Bardella, who has been announced as Le Pen’s future prime minister, is seen as an effective running mate, helping to attract younger demographics.

Political Realignment and Shifts

The shift is not limited to young voters, with reports indicating that some of Emmanuel Macron’s 2022 supporters are now considering voting for Le Pen. This marks an unprecedented realignment, with Macron previously positioning himself as a stable alternative to Le Pen’s political style.

Commentary on Youth Discontent

Paul Cébille, editor-in-chief of the Hexagone observatory, commented on the trend, noting that young people in rural and suburban areas feel increasingly threatened by economic pressures and limited opportunities. He highlighted the rising radicalism among youth, pushing them towards political options that offer a break from the past.

Le Pen’s Political Messaging

Le Pen has positioned herself as an alternative to the traditional left-right political divide, drawing on France’s Gaullist tradition. During her campaign launch in Orléans, she quoted an ancient Indian proverb, emphasizing her stance as neither left nor right.
