Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has highlighted how the state managed to withstand a major political wave despite national trends, warning that no state is immune to the shifting political landscape. Speaking during a press conference following the midterm elections, DeSantis outlined the challenges faced by other states and emphasized Florida’s resilience.

Florida’s Resilience Amid National Trends

DeSantis noted that Florida was able to win all statewide offices, including the Senate, governor, and Cabinet, in the face of what he described as a ‘100-year type political earthquake.’ This was a stark contrast to previous elections, where the state had not faced such a severe wave of Democratic gains. He pointed to states like Texas, Kansas, Michigan, and Ohio, which saw massive Democratic sweeps, as examples of the broader national trend.

‘I’ve never seen in a year that was worse for Republicans across the board in a midterm since I’ve been on God’s green earth,’ DeSantis said. He emphasized that Florida’s success was not due to being an isolated entity but rather a combination of strategic efforts and voter engagement.

Warning Against Complacency

Despite the state’s success, DeSantis warned against complacency, stating that Florida is not immune to national trends. He encouraged candidates to look at the 2024 results and adjust their strategies accordingly, noting that the political climate has shifted significantly.

‘If you look, the state was 13-point Trump margin, Senator Moody by three, all the way down to the governor by about 1 percent, so it was at least a 13, or was at least a 10-point swing, maybe in some respects even more than 13 points because we’ve gained a lot of registration advantage since November 2024,’ he said.

Amendment Three and Voter Engagement

DeSantis also credited the passage of Amendment Three, which increased the homestead exemption, as a key factor in the state’s success. He noted that the state’s ability to maintain its statewide offices despite the national wave was a significant achievement.

‘We effectively swept because if you have a once in 100 year negative wave, to only lose one state Senate seat, that’s a win in that situation. It just is,’ DeSantis said. He added that this victory should not be taken for granted and that continued efforts to deliver results for voters are essential.
