UK immigration policy is under scrutiny after it was revealed that a government consultation on immigration rules was largely influenced by foreign respondents. The Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, unveiled a plan to update permanent residency and citizenship rules, including fast-tracked citizenship for care workers and a pathway for undocumented immigrants. However, the consultation process drew criticism for its demographic composition.

Consultation Criticized for Foreign Bias

The Home Office admitted that 73% of respondents to the consultation were migrants, with an additional 18% identifying as British, possibly including family members of visa holders. This has led to accusations that the government is prioritizing foreign opinions over those of the British public.

Reform UK’s Shadow Home Secretary, Zia Yusuf, criticized the consultation, stating that foreign nationals should not have been involved in shaping immigration policy. He argued that the consultation’s results reflect a bias toward open borders, undermining the interests of British citizens.

Financial and Policy Implications

According to the Home Office, the proposed changes, which include fast-tracking 300,000 care workers for residency, could cost the taxpayer up to £10 billion in additional welfare payments and healthcare costs. Home Secretary Mahmood defended the policy, emphasizing its fairness and recognition of the unique contribution of care workers.

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has vowed to review all those granted citizenship under Mahmood’s scheme, aiming to revoke citizenship from migrants who do not contribute to the country. He also plans to abolish Indefinite Leave to Remain and replace it with a five-year work visa, a policy he says will prevent the negative impacts of past immigration policies.

Political Divide Over Immigration

The consultation has highlighted a growing political divide over immigration policy in the UK. While the government claims the changes are balanced, critics argue that the consultation process was skewed and that the policy direction is not aligned with the interests of the British public.
