Residents of Ceuta, a Spanish North African exclave, took to the streets in a silent protest on Thursday night, donning Guy Fawkes masks to demand solutions to the city’s growing challenges. The demonstration, organized by civil society groups, called for a return to normalcy after three months of turmoil following a mass illegal migrant invasion from neighboring Morocco.
Peaceful Demonstration in Square of the Kings
The protest, which began at 08:00 p.m. local time, took place in the city’s Square of the Kings and was marked by a collective silence, symbolizing unity and solidarity. Participants wore the iconic V for Vendetta masks, a reference to the graphic novel by Alan Moore, as a way to express their demands without political affiliations or flags.
El Faro de Ceuta reported that the silent demonstration was organized by representatives of various civil society organizations, who used the masks to rally support for their city. The organizers emphasized the need for a different approach, appealing to the ‘collective conscious through silence’ after numerous peaceful protests in Ceuta and mainland Spain.
Manifesto Against Political Neglect
A manifesto was read out during the protest, addressing those who make decisions from afar without visiting the city. The participants declared that Ceuta is not a ‘bargaining chip,’ but a historic city of men and women who demand the same respect and future as any other Spaniard.
Footage from the protest, shared on social media by El Pueblo de Ceuta, shows protesters holding Spanish and Ceuta flags, as well as banners condemning Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez as ‘Corrupt.’
Boisterous Protest Follows Silent One
Immediately after the silent protest, a separate but equally peaceful demonstration took place at the same square. Organized by Renace Ceuta, the group has been holding weekly protests against the migrant invasion. This protest marked the 14th week of the crisis, following a previous cancellation out of respect for the victims of the October 28 train accident in Toledo.
Gema Sánchez, a representative of Renace Ceuta, read a new manifesto denouncing the lack of change in the city’s situation. The organization called for respect for Ceuta’s sovereignty, real security guarantees, and ‘courageous decisions,’ rejecting what they described as ‘more unfulfilled promises and empty words.’
