A new report from The Trace reveals that gun control advocacy groups outspent gun rights organizations by a staggering 20 to 1 in Tuesday’s midterm elections. According to the report, gun control groups spent nearly $42 million in federal independent expenditures, compared to just $2.65 million by gun rights groups. This significant financial disparity highlights the growing influence of gun control advocacy in shaping political outcomes.

Targeted Spending in Key Races

The report indicates that the gun control lobby strategically focused on 15 key races, with 13 resulting in Democratic victories. This targeted spending suggests a deliberate effort to shift the political landscape in favor of policies aimed at reducing gun violence. However, the report also notes that Florida was a weak point for the gun control lobby, where Giffords spent over $850,000 to challenge Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R), but ultimately failed to secure a win.

Focus on Youth Outreach

The Trace highlighted that Giffords and Everytown for Gun Safety, affiliated with Mike Bloomberg, spent the most on youth outreach leading up to the election. These efforts were part of a broader strategy to influence younger voters and shape public opinion on gun safety. Additionally, the report noted that Everytown’s nonpolitical arm provides grants to The Trace, underscoring the interconnectedness of advocacy groups and media outlets in shaping the narrative around gun control.

Call for Legislative Action

Kris Brown, president of the Brady Campaign, emphasized that the election results represent a mandate for Democrats to take action on gun safety. He stated, “This election marks a mandate to enact and implement robust public safety policies that will meaningfully address the crisis of American gun violence.” This call to action reflects the broader political implications of the spending disparity and the potential for new legislation on gun control.
