PARIS — A school bus carrying children to school crashed on Friday morning in eastern France, killing a 7-year-old girl and an 18-year-old boy, according to Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot. Sixteen people were injured, three of them seriously, as reported by the prefecture in Ain.

Tragedy at the Scene

Tabarot visited the crash site in a rural area northeast of Lyon, describing the incident as a “tragic accident.” He expressed condolences to the families of the victims, stating that the bus was operated by the regional authority and was transporting about 15 students along with other passengers.

News broadcaster BFM TV reported that the passengers included children traveling to middle and high schools in the area. A photograph from the scene showed the bus had veered off the road, struck trees, and landed in a ditch. The accident has raised concerns about road safety and the conditions of school transportation in the region.

Investigations and Statements

Lent Mayor Yves Cristin told broadcaster Franceinfo that the road was slightly wet but there was no fog, and that the cause of the crash remains unclear. “We don’t understand why the bus … veered off the road,” he said.

Education Minister Édouard Geffray expressed his condolences during a visit to a high school in the Paris region, emphasizing the difficult moment for the education community and the families affected by the tragedy. “My thoughts, and those of the government and the entire education community, are with the families,” he said.

The incident has sparked a broader conversation about the safety of school transportation and the need for stricter oversight. Officials are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash to determine its exact cause and to ensure that such a tragedy does not occur again.
