Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) has ruled out challenging Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) for the position of Senate majority leader, stating he is not seeking to become the next Democratic leader. Instead, Van Hollen has set his sights on a 2028 presidential run, as Democrats secured control of the Senate following the midterm elections.
Van Hollen Sets Conditions for Next Leader
Van Hollen, during an interview with Fox 5 DC, emphasized that whoever becomes the next Senate majority leader must prioritize ending the ‘illegal and senseless war in Iran’ immediately. He stated, ‘Whoever’s going to be the next majority leader in the United States Senate needs to make clear to the caucus that he or she is going to do everything within our power to end the illegal and senseless war in Iran and do it now.’
Democrats Secure Senate Control Amid Trump’s Loss
With the Democrats winning control of the Senate, Schumer announced his intention to run for re-election as majority leader. The party’s victory, which included flipping Republican-held seats in states that Donald Trump won in 2024, was hailed as a significant repudiation of Trump’s policies. ‘Against all odds, we Democrats have won the Senate,’ Schumer said on election night.
No Formal Candidates Yet for Majority Leader
As of now, no senator has officially entered the race against Schumer. Potential candidates include Brian Schatz, Chris Murphy, Van Hollen, and Cory Booker, though none have formally stepped forward. The Senate will determine its next leader through a secret ballot vote in the coming weeks.
Support for Van Hollen Over Schumer
Michigan Senator-elect Abdul El-Sayed, the first Muslim elected to the Senate, has publicly supported Van Hollen as a potential replacement for Schumer. He reiterated his backing for Van Hollen, stating, ‘I think he’d be an amazing Senate majority leader.’
Rejection of Schumer by Some Democrats
A group of newly elected Democrats, including Troy Jackson of Maine, Peggy Flanagan of Minnesota, Adam Hamilton of Kansas, and Juliana Stratton of Illinois, have expressed their rejection of Schumer as the next leader. These senators represent the flipped Republican-held seats, signaling a shift in party dynamics.
Van Hollen’s Vision for the Economy
Van Hollen, who has served two terms in the Senate, argued that the election was a repudiation of Trump and a call to rebuild an economy he claims is ‘rigged against working people.’ He has pushed for an agenda that includes ‘not baby steps, not timid things, not finger in the wind politics.’
War Powers and Iran Conflict
Van Hollen has led the Senate effort to push for war powers resolutions aimed at ending what he calls Trump’s ‘illegal Iran war.’ These efforts have faced resistance from Republicans, who have repeatedly blocked such measures.
