Four states, including deep-blue Washington and Colorado, have passed ballot measures banning transgender-identifying males from competing in female sports teams, according to recent midterm election results. The measures reflect a growing public sentiment against the inclusion of trans athletes in girls’ sports, despite ongoing political pressure from Democrats to prioritize self-reported gender identity over biological reality.

States Pass Ballot Measures Against Trans Athlete Inclusion

In Washington, Initiative 638 passed with 56.8% of the vote, marking a significant blow to the transgender agenda. The measure requires students to provide a signed statement from a healthcare provider confirming their biological sex before participating in female sports teams. While the initiative is statutory, it can be reversed by state lawmakers, making it a temporary change to state law.

Colorado voters also passed two transgender-related initiatives. Proposition 134, which bans males from female sports teams, received 52.2% of the vote. The measure mandates that students compete on teams matching their biological sex and requires schools to categorize teams as male, female, or coeducational. Proposition 135, which bans sex-change surgeries for minors, passed with 52% of the vote, reflecting a strong public stance against gender-affirming procedures for children.

Arizona and Nebraska Take Strong Stances

In Arizona, Proposition 318 passed with 58.9% of the vote, prohibiting transgender-identifying males from female sports and spaces, including locker rooms and restrooms. The measure also requires schools to categorize athletic teams as male, female, or co-ed. Similarly, Nebraska’s Initiative 442, which passed with 67.8% of the vote, changes the state constitution to prohibit trans males from participating in female sports, marking a significant constitutional shift.

These measures have sparked debate about the role of transgender individuals in sports and the broader implications for public policy. Despite the Democratic Party’s expected dominance in the midterm elections, the results suggest that the issue may not be a decisive factor in future political campaigns. However, the presence of pro-transgender candidates who won against Republicans indicates that the issue remains politically relevant and potentially contentious in the coming years.
