Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal government has announced plans to grant another 2.25 million permanent and temporary resident admissions over the next three years. The decision has sparked debate, as Canada faces growing opposition to mass immigration, a housing affordability crisis, and mounting pressure on public services.

Under its immigration plan for the next three years, the government intends to admit 380,000 permanent residents and 370,000 new temporary residents annually. That amounts to 2.25 million admissions over three years, although some permanent residency recipients will already be living in Canada.
Yesterday, Mark Carney announced the highest level of permanent immigration in Canadian history to help his corporate buddies who profit off mass immigration.
Carney’s government claims that importing more people will help address labour shortages, attract skilled workers and stimulate economic growth. Approximately 245,000 permanent residency places each year will be allocated to economic immigration.
Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has blasted Carney’s immigration plans as coming at the expense of ordinary Canadians. “We love immigration for people in numbers that we can absorb, where there are jobs, health care and housing but not when the numbers exceed our capacity to absorb people,” he said on Friday. “Our economy is collapsing in real time,” he warned. “Canadian jobs should go to Canadians first.”

The announcement comes after years of extraordinary population growth under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. During his over-decade-long tenure, mass immigration policies placed enormous pressure on Canada’s housing market, infrastructure and healthcare system. Canada’s population surpassed 41 million in 2024, having stood at approximately 38 million just four years earlier.
The Liberals have previously admitted that past immigration levels exceeded the country’s capacity to accommodate newcomers. Nevertheless, Carney is ramping up annual permanent immigration targets of 380,000 through 2029. His government is also creating additional pathways for up to 200,000 people already living in Canada to obtain permanent residency.
