A powerful nor’easter has caused widespread power outages and dangerous coastal flooding across New Jersey and New York, with impacts expected to last through the weekend. The storm, which brought high wind gusts and rip currents, began affecting the region on Friday evening, prompting officials to issue warnings and prepare for severe conditions.
State of Emergency Declared
New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill (D) declared a State of Emergency for eight counties including Atlantic, Burlington, and Ocean, as the storm approached. She warned that the storm would bring strong winds, heavy rain, and significant coastal flooding, urging residents to take the situation seriously and follow local guidance.
Power Outages Across the Region
According to PowerOutage.com, over 37,000 customers in New Jersey were without power as of 10 am ET, with Ocean County alone reporting over 7,000 outages. Neighboring states also faced significant disruptions, with nearly 28,000 outages in New York, 15,000 in Connecticut, and over 5,000 in Massachusetts. Suffolk County in New York had the highest concentration of outages, with over 11,000 affected.
Severe Weather and Flooding Expected
Videos captured the severe conditions across the East Coast, with the storm battering the low-lying coasts and causing vehicles to be submerged. Storm Tracker Jaden Pappenheim reported that the west side of New Jersey’s Surf City was “almost completely crippled” by the storm.
The National Weather Service (NWS) warned that the storm would not weaken until Sunday night and would bring flooding from northern New Jersey to southern New England. Major coastal flooding was expected during multiple high tide cycles through the weekend, with widespread flooding predicted by Saturday morning. The NWS also highlighted the risk of repeated flooding, strong rip currents, beach erosion, and property damage across the Carolinas and Mid-Atlantic regions into Southern New England through Monday.
Residents Urged to Prepare
Residents are being urged to prepare for significant inundation in low-lying areas, including roads underwater and impacts to homes and businesses. The NWS emphasized the importance of staying alert and following local guidance to mitigate the risks posed by the storm.
