A powerful nor’easter is wreaking havoc along the U.S. East Coast, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and dangerous coastal flooding to millions of people. The storm is impacting states including New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, and Maryland, with New Jersey bearing the brunt of the damage. Social media videos show storm surges and rising water levels in the Garden State, prompting emergency declarations in several areas.

Emergency Declarations and Power Outages

As the storm intensifies, state officials have declared a state of emergency for portions of New Jersey and New York, including New York City, Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, and more. Tens of thousands are already without power, with the National Weather Service (NWS) warning that the storm is not expected to weaken until Sunday night.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul emphasized the severity of the situation, stating, “We’re expecting dangerous coastal flooding, strong winds and potential power outages through the weekend. Take this storm seriously.” Residents are urged to stay alert, avoid unnecessary travel, and monitor real-time updates through text alerts.

Coastal Flooding and Storm Surges

The NWS has issued warnings of major coastal flooding along the Mid-Atlantic Coast, with repeated rounds of flooding expected through the weekend. Low-lying areas near the shore, including roads and homes, are at risk of significant inundation. Large breaking waves will also generate strong rip currents, beach erosion, and road closures across the Carolinas and Mid-Atlantic regions.

Wind gusts are expected to reach 45-65 mph in parts of Eastern Long Island and Southeastern New England, which could lead to power outages and tree damage. Heavy rain is also causing concerns, with the potential for localized flash flooding in urban areas, roads, and small streams.

Long-Term Impacts and Preparations

Residents and officials are being urged to prepare for the storm’s long-term impacts, including damage to homes and businesses. The NWS has issued a Slight Risk of excessive rainfall, with heavy rain expected to continue through Sunday night. The storm’s effects are expected to last through Monday as it moves northeastward, with ongoing threats to coastal communities along the Eastern Seaboard.
