California Mother Arrested After Newborn Found in Dumpster

More than a year after a newborn was found abandoned in a dumpster on a rainy day in Riverside, California, authorities have arrested the infant’s mother. The baby was discovered on May 4, 2025, at an apartment complex on Jackson Street, according to the Los Angeles Times. A resident found the baby, who was crying and still attached to his umbilical cord, just hours after being born.

Paramedics rushed the baby to a nearby hospital, where he was listed in stable condition. The infant remains in the custody of Child Protective Services (CPS), as reported by Fox 11. Riverside Police Department officials conducted an investigation to identify the mother, ultimately apprehending 26-year-old Astrid Nohemi Lopez Ramos on September 17.

Ramos was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center on suspicion of child endangerment, with bail set at $35,000. The case highlights the importance of California’s Safe Haven Law, which allows parents to surrender a baby within 72 hours of birth to a hospital or fire station. This law provides a legal and safe option for those in crisis.

Authorities have not disclosed any further details about the mother’s motive or the circumstances surrounding the baby’s abandonment. However, the case has sparked discussions about child welfare and the need for better support systems for at-risk families. Anyone with information about the case is encouraged to contact Detective Jessica Iniguez or Detective Jarid Zuetel.
