Wisconsin police discovered 30 partially clothed males covered in food, condiments, and other liquids in the sweltering basement of an unaccredited fraternity house near the University of Wisconsin-Madison on Wednesday. The incident, described as a hazing event, was reported after an anonymous tip led officers to the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity located along the 100 block of Langdon Street.

Fraternity Suspended, Members Arrested

Officers arrived at the scene around 8:20 p.m. and found the group in an 81-degree basement. Several of the young men showed signs of physical assault, prompting the police to investigate the situation further. The fraternity president, Brayden Klein, and vice president, Samuel Vane, were arrested on suspicion of hazing and disorderly conduct. Both are 20 years old and have been identified as key figures in the incident.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison confirmed that Alpha Epsilon Pi is an unrecognized and unaccredited student organization that was terminated by the university over a decade ago. Despite this, the fraternity is legally allowed to call itself a chapter unaffiliated with the university. The university has suspended the Madison chapter pending a thorough investigation into alleged violations of health and safety guidelines.

History of Violations and Legal Actions

The fraternity has a history of violations, including alcohol-related incidents and hazing. In 2013, the university placed the fraternity on probation after a 17-year-old boy and a guest were rushed to detox following excessive alcohol consumption. Over the next several years, the fraternity faced seven more violations related to alcohol, hazing, and disrespectful behavior.

Additionally, Hofstra University suspended its Alpha Epsilon Pi chapter in 2019 after a video showed partygoers hoisting a dog to drink from a keg upside down, highlighting the broader issues of hazing and irresponsible behavior within the fraternity.

The Madison Police Department urged anyone with information about the incident or who was involved to contact Crime Stoppers. The department emphasized the importance of community safety, particularly during the ongoing recruitment process for sororities and fraternities.
