Doctors in the Netherlands have legally ended the life of a nearly 2-year-old child with severe brain damage, according to a government report. The child, born at 26 weeks, suffered from extensive brain damage, severe epilepsy, a damaged immune system, and cerebral visual impairment. The report, released by the Assessment Committee for Late Termination of Pregnancy and Termination of Life in Newborns and Children Aged 1 to 12 Years, stated that the child’s condition showed no signs of improvement and that the parents requested the termination.

Legal Framework and Medical Justification

The Netherlands expanded its euthanasia laws in 2024, allowing assisted suicide for children aged 1 to 12 with severe medical conditions. The case in question, which occurred late last year, is the first under the new rules. Government investigators concluded that the doctors acted with due care, as the child’s condition was deemed to be unbearably painful with no prospect of improvement.

“In the course of the child’s short life, there was a complete lack of development or improvement. Every facet of ‘being human’ in terms of motor skills, behavior and personality was severely affected, and there would be no improvement,” the report found.

Global Reactions and Ethical Concerns

The case has sparked international debate, with religious and conservative groups condemning the practice. Pope Leo XIV recently spoke out against assisted suicide, emphasizing the inalienable dignity of human life. “What is legal is not necessarily moral,” he stated.

Meanwhile, more than a dozen U.S. states now allow assisted suicide, with recent additions including Illinois and New York. The practice remains controversial, with critics arguing that it undermines the value of life and can be influenced by economic or social pressures.
