CNN host Erin Burnett is set to moderate a town hall with progressive Texas Senate candidate James Talarico on October 14, as the network continues to face legal challenges over its coverage of the White House. The event, hosted in partnership with Jubilee Media, will feature a live audience of Democrats, Republicans, and Independent voters in Texas.

Media Partnership and Political Engagement

Jubilee Media, known for its YouTube platform that hosts debates across the political spectrum, is collaborating with CNN to provide a diverse audience for Talarico’s town hall. The event also extends an invitation to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, the Republican candidate for the Senate seat currently held by John Cornyn.

Erin Burnett’s Comments on White House Access

Burnett, who has moderated the Democratic Party’s 2020 primary debate and interviewed Democratic candidates in 2024, has publicly criticized President Donald Trump’s ban on CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from the White House press pool. She has accused Trump of silencing dissenting voices, comparing his actions to those of Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

Free Speech and Media Bias Criticisms

Despite her criticism of Trump’s media restrictions, Burnett has previously expressed skepticism about free speech in the context of Trump’s own remarks. During the 2021 Twitter ban of Trump, she did not advocate for the removal of his account, and she questioned whether platforms should limit speech from figures like Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Legal Developments and White House Response

A federal judge recently ordered the reinstatement of CNN, MS NOW, and Politico to the White House press pool, but the White House has yet to allow CNN to travel with Trump on Air Force One. Attorney General Todd Blanche defended the decision, stating that the White House routinely decides who can accompany the president.
