During his address to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Khalifa Shaheen al-Marar, Minister of State for the United Arab Emirates (UAE), highlighted his country’s role as a trusted international mediator. Marar condemned Iran for its occupation of UAE islands and its threat to navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, but stopped short of directly criticizing Iran for its missile and drone attacks on the UAE.
Support for Trump’s Gaza Plan
Marar emphasized the UAE’s support for the international framework aimed at ending the conflict in Gaza, stating that the country was among the first to back the plan. He called for the full implementation of the comprehensive plan proposed by former U.S. President Donald Trump, which includes the withdrawal of Israel from the Gaza Strip, the disarmament of Hamas, and the establishment of a just and lasting settlement based on the two-state solution.
Avoiding Direct Mention of Hamas and October 7 Attack
Despite his strong stance on the Gaza conflict, Marar avoided naming Hamas or other Palestinian terror groups, as well as acknowledging the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel that sparked the current war. Instead, he hinted that the Palestinian Authority (PA) must meet certain standards of peaceful conduct if it is to become a recognized state.
UAE’s Economic and Technological Vision
Marar also outlined the UAE’s economic vision, emphasizing its success in delivering prosperity through investments in national strength, human capital, and emerging technologies. He highlighted the country’s expansion in artificial intelligence, healthcare, and education, as well as its focus on water security for the Middle East and Africa.
International Partnerships and Crime Prevention
The UAE’s commitment to international law and cooperation was another key theme. Marar noted the hosting of the 15th UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, which underscores the need to adapt to technological advancements and protect societies from crime and exploitation. He also emphasized the UAE’s dedication to values such as tolerance, peaceful coexistence, and inclusion.
Commitment to Moderation and Peace
Concluding his address, Marar reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to moderation, the rejection of violence and extremism, and the investment in people and the region’s vast potential. His speech underscored the UAE’s ongoing role as a global hub for trade, investment, and development.
