President Donald Trump has unveiled a $54 billion South Korean investment tied to an Alaska liquefied natural gas (LNG) project, marking a significant step in the administration’s energy and jobs initiatives ahead of the November midterm elections.
Project Details and Trade Agreement
The announcement follows a 2025 trade agreement in which South Korea pledged $350 billion in U.S. investments in exchange for reduced tariffs on its automotive and manufacturing exports. The project focuses on an 807-mile natural gas pipeline from Alaska’s North Slope to a southern LNG export terminal, aimed at providing a reliable fuel supply that will help lower local energy costs.
Support from Alaska Senator
The initiative has received strong backing from Senator Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska), who is facing a competitive reelection race against former Congresswoman Mary Peltola (D-Alaska). Sullivan has consistently supported Alaska’s natural gas project and encouraged South Korean investment, an effort that Trump has praised as a major initiative.
“That’s why we have a lot of people from Alaska, including a very great governor and your great senator, Dan Sullivan,” Trump said in the Oval Office on Tuesday. “So, I want to thank, in particular, Dan Sullivan for getting this deal done.”
Trump also highlighted Sullivan’s role in advancing the project, calling him a “spectacular senator” who has worked closely with the administration.
Additional Energy Investments
The announcement comes after Trump confirmed that Minnesota-based Mesabi Metallics will build the largest steel plant in U.S. history in eastern Iowa. The White House emphasized the importance of these investments in fulfilling Trump’s promises to boost American energy production, unlock Alaska’s natural resources, and accelerate the nation’s nuclear energy renaissance.
“Unlike the Democrats’ energy subtraction policies, this President’s energy dominance agenda continues to cement the United States as the energy capital of the world,” said White House spokesman Taylor Rogers.
Potential Impact
The project is expected to create thousands of jobs and enhance energy security for the United States. It also underscores the administration’s focus on strengthening international partnerships and promoting domestic energy production as part of its broader economic strategy.
