California’s High Costs Threaten Business Survival, Says CNN Correspondent
CNN’s Kyung Lah highlights rising living costs and regulatory burdens in California, warning they could impact Governor Newsom’s political future.

CNN Senior National Correspondent Kyung Lah warned on Wednesday’s broadcast of “Inside Politics” about the growing challenges facing California residents and businesses due to soaring living costs and complex regulatory environments. Lah emphasized that these pressures are not just affecting everyday consumers but are also pushing small businesses to the brink, potentially impacting political figures like Governor Gavin Newsom as he eyes higher office.
Small Business Struggles in California
Lah featured the story of Tom Sopit, a restaurant owner who had to close his business after years of financial strain. Sopit explained that the difficulties he faced were not isolated to his own operations but were the result of a combination of state, federal, and local policies. He described how the rising costs of essentials like insurance, daycare, and business fees, along with strict regulations, made it nearly impossible to maintain a viable business.
“We’re not just talking about the price of milk or the price of gas,” Lah said, noting that California remains the most expensive state for these basic goods. “We’re talking about structural issues—like being able to afford insurance, secure daycare so you can work, and keep that job, then dealing with the fees and regulations that restrict you from building or expanding your business. All of it is just crushing.”
Generational Impact and Political Implications
Lah also highlighted the broader generational impact of these economic pressures, pointing out that Sopit’s parents, who were immigrants, were able to establish a successful restaurant in Los Angeles. In contrast, Sopit found it nearly impossible to follow in their footsteps. This generational disparity, Lah argued, is a key issue that could influence future political candidates, including Newsom, as he seeks to run for higher office.
“These Democrats today are looking at generations where they can’t have what their parents have,” Lah said. “Sopit’s parents had a business, and their son couldn’t do the same. That is going to chase these candidates—and, frankly, it’s going to chase Gov. Newsom as he seeks higher office.”
The conversation underscores the deepening economic challenges in California, which are not only affecting individuals but also shaping the political landscape. As businesses struggle to survive and families face rising costs, the state’s leaders may find themselves under increasing pressure to address these systemic issues.
