A student has died after falling from a fourth-floor balcony at Benjamin Franklin High School in Los Angeles, according to local authorities. The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon, and video footage obtained by local news outlets shows the tragic sequence of events leading to the teen’s death.
Classroom Fight and Fall
Firefighters were called to the campus after reports of a fall, and they found the student who had fallen from a four-story building. The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed the death of the male juvenile, though his name has not been released. The student was 18 years old, as reported by FOX 11.
Video footage obtained by the station shows a physical fight inside a classroom during instruction. A student wearing a backpack is seen repeatedly punching a classmate with reddish hair while a teacher screams for them to stop. After the fight appeared to ease, the student in the backpack landed one more punch.
The reddish-haired student then left the classroom, and later footage shows him walking the fourth-floor corridor, grabbing the balcony railing, lifting himself over the side, and dropping four stories. A student witness told FOX 11 that they heard rumbling and falling, and when they looked up, they saw a kid getting hurt and throwing himself over the fourth floor.
Investigation and Response
The Los Angeles Police Department has stated there is no evidence of foul play, and preliminary findings suggest the victim was not actively followed or threatened at the moment of the fall. The other student involved in the fight has been identified and interviewed, but no arrests or charges have been announced.
Police, school police, and the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner are reviewing video and witness statements, including whether head trauma from the fight left the teen disoriented before the fall. The motive for the classroom fight has not been confirmed.
