The U.S. Senate confirmed Keith Sonderling as the permanent Secretary of Labor in a 47-to-41 vote on Wednesday night. Sonderling, who has been serving as acting secretary since April, officially filled the role left by former Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer.
President Donald Trump nominated Sonderling for the position in June, praising his experience and leadership within the department. Sonderling had previously served as deputy secretary and acting administrator of the Wage and Hour Division.
“I am honored to be confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the 31st Secretary of Labor,” Sonderling posted on X. “[POTUS] is the greatest President for the American Worker, and I’m grateful for his trust and confidence in me to lead [USDOL].” He added, “America’s workers and job creators are the greatest in the world. I will work every day to ensure they have a Department of Labor that is accountable, effective, and responsive to their needs.”
The confirmation marks the end of a lengthy process, with the Senate approving the nomination after weeks of deliberation. Sonderling’s confirmation comes amid ongoing debates over labor policies and economic conditions in the U.S.
As the new Secretary of Labor, Sonderling is expected to focus on issues such as wage standards, workplace safety, and support for American workers. His background in labor policy and administrative roles positions him well for the responsibilities of the position.
With the confirmation complete, Sonderling is now tasked with leading the Department of Labor into a new era, addressing the challenges and opportunities facing the American workforce.
