Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-OH) criticized the U.S. Senate’s outdated rules and the reluctance of long-time senators to adapt to modern political realities during a roundtable discussion with Breitbart News. Moreno argued that the Senate’s current procedural hurdles are preventing critical legislation from advancing, including the SAVE America Act, which aims to require voter ID and proof of citizenship for voter registration.

Senate Rules and Legislative Stalemate

During the discussion, Moreno addressed concerns about the Senate’s decision to go on recess without passing the SAVE America Act. He emphasized the need for rule reform, stating that the current system is not effective in facilitating meaningful legislative progress. “Old timer senators cling to a view of what the Senate could have been,” Moreno said, “but that’s not the reality of today.”

Moreno explained that the SAVE America Act is a straightforward piece of legislation requiring voter ID and proof of citizenship. He noted that 53 Republicans voted for the bill, but no Democrats supported it. “We need 60 votes to end debate,” he said, highlighting the difficulty of achieving the necessary majority without rule changes.

Examples of Democratic Opposition

Moreno used the Senate’s recent vote on a bill to ban insider trading as another example of Democratic resistance. He pointed out that every Democrat voted against the bill, despite its clear importance. “This is why conservative media is so important to get the truth out,” he said, arguing that the media should focus on holding Democrats accountable for their voting patterns.

Moreno also criticized the media for not covering the important issues facing the American public, such as voting rights and corruption. “This is why President Trump gets so angry at the media,” he said, “because they’re covering just the wrong things.”

Call for Rule Reform and Media Accountability

Moreno stressed the need for comprehensive rule reform, including the elimination of the filibuster, to enable the Senate to function effectively. He emphasized that without such changes, critical legislation will continue to be blocked. “We’ve got to take a look at the rules,” he said, “because unless we end that rule or modify the Senate rules, we can’t make that happen.”

As the discussion concluded, Moreno reiterated the importance of conservative media in informing the public about the actions of elected officials. He called for greater scrutiny of Democratic policies and a more accurate portrayal of the legislative process in the media.
