Captain Smit Machchhar, a FlyDubai pilot who survived a life-threatening attack by his co-pilot, is recovering in the hospital after making a heroic decision that saved passengers’ lives. The incident occurred during a flight where Machchhar was stabbed by his Omani co-pilot, but he managed to unlock the cockpit door and allow passengers to subdue the hijacker.

Fox News reports that Machchhar spoke with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi from his hospital bed, recounting the chaotic moments before his brave decision saved lives. During a phone call on Friday, Machchhar told Modi, “You are my biggest idol, and I am feeling very proud that you called me and encouraged me. I was fighting for my life in that moment.”

“It was a moment when I thought, because I had fallen on the floor, I was wounded and fell down,” he shared. “At that moment, I thought if I don’t get up, I’ve been flying for the last 17 years and I have been a captain for the last 11 years, and even if I shut my eyes, I can tell what is happening inside a plane.”

“When I was lying on the floor, I could feel that the aircraft was plunging, and I said to myself while I was getting beaten, ‘This is the last push Smit, do it, the door is right there,’” he said. “Somehow, I opened the door and everyone came in and everyone else had an equal role (in the rescue). I was trying to save myself, but I also knew that I can’t let anyone die,” he added.

After he was able to unlock the door, a group of passengers stormed the cockpit, subduing the co-pilot, keeping the aircraft stable, and tending to Machchhar.

Reporter Aditya Raj Kaul shared that Machchhar continues to improve but suffered massive blood loss and deep wounds. The incident has sparked widespread admiration for the pilot’s courage and quick thinking under extreme pressure.
