An elderly woman in Orange County, California, faces felony charges after allegedly running over her puppy with a minivan, according to local authorities. Hahn Nguyen, 75, of Anaheim, was arrested for the incident that shocked the community and sparked widespread outrage.
According to the Santa Ana Police Department, Nguyen was captured on a Ring camera pulling over her minivan in a Santa Ana neighborhood. She placed her 9-month-old pitbull mix puppy on the pavement, dumped a pile of dog food, and then drove away. As she left, she ran over the puppy, paused as the tire was on top of the dog, and then drove off. The incident was captured on video and quickly went viral.
Authorities used license plate reader technology to identify Nguyen. The Orange County Register reported that Nguyen’s boyfriend was annoyed that the puppy was chewing his shoes, which may have contributed to the decision to abandon the dog. However, Nguyen told police she did not intentionally run over the puppy.
Todd Spitzer, the Orange County District Attorney, charged Nguyen with felony animal cruelty and felony animal abuse with a felony enhancement for personal use of a weapon. Spitzer emphasized the gravity of the act, stating, “This act of violence not only ended the life of an innocent puppy, but it also inflicted trauma on every single person who came across the video footage of the murder of an animal.”
Spitzer also addressed the broader issue of violence, saying, “Violence is not a singular act. It inflicts pain and suffering on those who are subjected to it and on those who witness it. As the elected District Attorney of Orange County, I refuse to accept a society in which violence of any kind is acceptable.”
