As President Donald Trump weighs the possibility of resuming strikes against Iran, the United States is deploying additional military forces to the Middle East. Seven more warships, including the USS Theodore Roosevelt and three accompanying destroyers, are en route to the region, carrying approximately 9,000 troops, according to The Financial Times. The fleet is expected to reach the Middle East by the end of November.
Additional Troop Deployments
The USS Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group (ARG), which includes an amphibious warship and two docking ships, is also heading to the region. The group is accompanied by the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit. The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) has not provided official comments on the deployment.
Carrier strike groups typically carry around 5,000 troops, while ARGs have approximately 4,200 sailors and Marines aboard. The deployment brings the total number of U.S. warships in the region to about 20, with the Navy maintaining a blockade of Iranian ports and assisting tankers through the Strait of Hormuz.
Following the withdrawal of Iraqi forces, the number of U.S. troops in the region has increased to around 50,000. Trump recently told TIME Magazine that it is “possible” he would resume strikes on Iran if an adequate deal with Tehran is not reached after the midterm elections. The U.S. has not officially announced strikes on Iran or Iranian vessels in nearly a month.
As the midterms approach, the issue of military action in Iran remains a politically sensitive topic. The deployment of additional troops and warships underscores the ongoing tensions in the region and the U.S. military’s readiness to respond to potential threats.
