President Trump criticizes Texas Senate candidate Ken Paxton, calling him a ‘pain in the *ss,’ while urging voters to support him.

President Donald Trump on Thursday urged Texas voters to support Republican state Attorney General Ken Paxton in the Senate race, while openly criticizing his loyalty and style. Speaking at a Peterbilt truck plant in Denton, Trump called Paxton a ‘pain in the *ss sometimes,’ but praised his unwavering support during his political battles with the ‘radical Left.’
Trump’s Mixed Message on Paxton
Despite his harsh words, Trump emphasized the need for Paxton’s election, calling him ‘the greatest attorney general in the United States of America.’ The remarks came as Paxton faces Democratic state Rep. James Talarico in a closely watched race that could influence the Senate’s control. Trump’s comments echoed his earlier jokes at the Republican Party’s midterm convention in Dallas, where he mocked Paxton’s appearance and demeanor.
Contest for Senate Control
With Election Day less than five weeks away, Republicans are defending their 53-47 Senate majority. The Texas race is seen as a key battleground, with a Fox News poll showing Talarico leading Paxton by 51% to 49% among likely voters. National Republican groups have stepped up fundraising for Paxton’s campaign after his fundraising lagged behind Talarico’s.
Audio Leak Sparks Debate
Trump’s renewed involvement in the race came a day after The New York Times reported on leaked audio purportedly showing Paxton criticizing the impact of Trump’s midterm convention on his campaign. Paxton’s campaign dismissed the recording as ‘manipulated nonsense’ from the Times, while the Texas Tribune noted it had not independently verified the claim.
Trump’s Campaign Push
Trump also criticized Talarico, dubbing him ‘Tala-freako,’ and urged Republicans to better communicate their achievements to voters. He then left Texas for a rally in Oklahoma as part of a broader campaign push through Republican-leaning states. Senior Republicans, including Vice President JD Vance, are expected to campaign for candidates across the country in the coming weeks.
