Elon Musk is returning to an advisory role in the U.S. government, this time as part of a Pentagon initiative focused on the future of warfare. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth announced the project, dubbed ‘Project Meridian,’ which aims to harness American innovation to shape future military strategies.

Project Meridian and Key Collaborators

The initiative, which will draw on expertise beyond the military, will be led by Musk alongside Anduril Industries founder Palmer Luckey and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. Hegseth emphasized the importance of leveraging American innovators and technologists to anticipate and develop solutions for future conflicts.

‘Their work will be focused on discovering, developing and fielding the weapons and systems that our children and our grandchildren will need in their lifetimes,’ Hegseth said.

Musk’s Vision for Future Warfare

Musk has long argued that drones and hypersonic missiles will dominate future conflicts. In 2024, he stated that the future of war would be ‘all about drones and hypersonic missiles,’ suggesting that human-piloted fighter jets would be obsolete in the coming years.

Previous Government Involvement

Before his recent role, Musk spearheaded the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) initiative, which aimed to streamline federal operations. His involvement in the Trump administration came to an end after a public falling out with the former president.

Despite the fallout, Trump publicly praised Musk at a memorial service for Turning Point USA CEO Charlie Kirk, stating, ‘I’ve always liked Elon,’ and expressing hope for a future reconciliation.

AI and Government Technology

Musk and other tech leaders recently met with the White House to discuss artificial intelligence. Trump signed an executive order to replace the term ‘Artificial Intelligence’ with ‘Super Intelligence’ (SI), claiming the new terminology better reflects the technology’s capabilities.

At the launch of America.gov, a government website featuring an AI-assisted chatbot, Trump thanked Musk for his earlier contributions to government technology transformation.
