Renowned rocker Bruce Springsteen took the stage at the “Power to the People” festival in Columbia, Maryland, Saturday, leading a left-wing political rally that featured anti-Trump sentiment, pro-Palestine chants, and criticism of immigration enforcement. The event, held at Merriweather Post Pavilion, was marketed as a music festival but quickly became a platform for political activism ahead of the midterms.

Political Focus Over Music

The festival, which featured Springsteen, Dave Matthews, and Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello, was designed to promote voter registration and political organizing. Organizers emphasized the power of ordinary citizens to “shape” the country “on, and beyond, Election Day.” Despite the musical line-up, politics dominated the agenda, with attendees encouraged to engage in activism rather than simply enjoy a concert.

A hip-hop group opened the event with chants of “Free Palestine,” denounced Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as a “terrorist organization,” and criticized “Western imperialism.”

Tom Morello, a longtime left-wing activist, used his performance to attack “fascists and the would-be dictators” and wealthy “oligarchs.” The festival grounds also featured a “Freedom Village” with activist groups like Indivisible, the ACLU, and Third Act.

Indivisible, known for its role in organizing anti-Trump protests such as the “No Kings” and “Hands Off” demonstrations, was a prominent presence at the event. Springsteen, who has increasingly aligned himself with Democratic politics, endorsed Kamala Harris and Tim Walz during the 2024 presidential election and has used his concerts to rally against Trump, ICE, and the Iran conflict.

Many of the performers had close ties to the Democratic Party. Dave Matthews previously participated in a concert promoting Joe Biden, Harris, and Democratic candidates, while also expressing support for Bernie Sanders. Festival DJ Shepard Fairey, known for creating Barack Obama’s famous “Hope” poster, produced political artwork supporting Harris in 2024.

The event, which took place just weeks before the midterms, resembled more of a massive left-wing rally than a typical music festival. With the upcoming elections set to determine control of Congress, the gathering underscored the growing political influence of progressive movements in the United States.
