Minnesota’s Senate race is shaping up as one of the closest and most contentious contests in the 2026 midterms. With Democratic Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan locked in a tight race against Republican Michele Tafoya, the state’s political landscape is being reshaped by a combination of policy positions, community issues, and law enforcement challenges.
A Democratic Candidate in a Blue State Struggles
Despite Minnesota’s reputation as a reliably blue state, Flanagan’s campaign is facing significant headwinds. The Senate race, which is currently a near dead heat, shows Flanagan leading by just a narrow margin in most polls. Big Data Poll has her ahead by two points, while InsiderAdvantage shows her up by one. KSTP/SurveyUSA found the race tied, and the RealClearPolitics average shows a mere 1.6-point lead for Flanagan, well within the margin of error.
Flanagan’s record has become a major point of contention. She supports permanent gender surgeries for minors, advocates for completely defunding ICE, and seeks full citizenship for every illegal immigrant in Minnesota. These positions, while aligned with the Democratic base, sit far outside the mainstream in a state that has not supported a Republican presidential candidate since 1972.
Benefits Fraud and Somali Community Issues
Separate polling shows that benefits fraud is a top issue for Minnesota voters, greatly benefiting Tafoya. A SurveyUSA poll found that 14% of voters ranked fraud as an important issue, compared to 12% for healthcare. The benefits fraud scandal has already forced Governor Tim Walz to abandon his reelection campaign, and the Democratic Party’s decision to nominate Flanagan has been widely seen as a misstep.
Flanagan cannot distance herself from party leadership that has long turned a blind eye to Somali community issues, largely out of fear of losing support. The situation has worsened as law and order has broken down, with reports of gang activity involving Somali youth.
Gang Violence and Public Safety Concerns
A report from earlier this summer revealed that a dozen Somali gangs, many with hundreds of members, including teenagers, are causing havoc with shootings and murders. Ramsey County Sheriff Bob Fletcher reported that as many as three hundred Somali youth are involved in gang activity in the Twin Cities. His office linked these gangs to at least fourteen homicides over the past two years and more than one hundred shootings, including gunfights at high school graduations and the Minnesota State Fair.
The latest incident occurred on Friday night, when shots rang out outside Eden Prairie High School’s football stadium during a homecoming game against Minnetonka. Police evacuated the stadium and asked residents to stay away. Two people were injured, and neither attended either school. Eden Prairie police believe the shooting was targeted, and no arrests have been made.
Law enforcement sources again confirm Somali gangs are responsible for tonight's shooting at the Eden Prairie game.
Minnesota Democrats have ignored both the fraud and the violence, and voters are likely to punish them for their inaction. Eden Prairie, an affluent suburb of Minneapolis, is not the kind of place one would expect to see gang violence. If Minnesota Democrats are not doing enough to combat these issues, voters will take notice.
The impact of these challenges extends beyond the Senate race. The most recent governor’s race poll, tracked by the New York Times, shows Sen. Amy Klobuchar leading Republican Lisa Demuth by just two points, highlighting the broader political uncertainty in the state.
State officials are assisting local authorities to find those responsible after a shooting outside the Eden Prairie football game. No homecoming, in any community, should be disrupted by gun violence. Minnesotans are keeping students and families in our thoughts tonight.
